A man refraining from shaking hands with a woman offering her hand to shake his

Q 1: If a girl offers her hand to shake it with a young man in the presence of some people, (Part No. 17; Page No. 35) should the young man refrain from shaking hands with her or is he permitted to do so to avoid putting her in an embarrassing situation?

A: It is impermissible for a man to shake hands with a non-Mahram (not a spouse or an unmarriageable relative) woman. It is worth mentioning that following the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding this and other issues should be given priority over comforting the non-Mahram girl referred to above. However, you have to be gentle while refraining from shaking hands with her and you have to clarify to her the ruling of the Shar` (Islamic law) on this matter. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
