A woman seeing her daughter's suitor unveiled

424

Q 1: A man had proposed to a woman and has now concluded the marriage contract with her. Is it permissible for him to see his bride's mother unveiled and shake her hand or is she still an Ajnabiyyah (a woman lawful for the man to marry) to him until he consummates the marriage, after which she will become a Mahram (unmarriageable relative) and it will be permissible for him to look at her and shake her hand?

A: A fiancée’s mother is considered as an Ajnabiyyah to her daughter’s suitor until the marriage contract is concluded, and it is not Halal (lawful) for him to see her unveiled, look at her, or shake her hand. (Part No. 17; Page No. 362) However, after the conclusion of the marriage contract, he becomes a Mahram to her, so she can uncover her veil in front of him and shake hands with him. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
