Q 1: Last year my husband bought a house in Egypt. We live in one part of this house and rent out the rest. Is Zakah (obligatory charity) due on the rent we receive or on the value of the house itself?

A: Zakah is due on the rent that remains in your possession for one lunar year. However, if you spend it before the end of the lunar year, no Zakah is due on it. As for the building itself, no Zakah is due on it as you bought it to live in and rent, and not to sell. (Part No. 9; Page No. 344) May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
