What is the religious ruling on a Muslim who abandons Islam?

He should be asked to repent. If he does not repent, he should be killed by the Muslim ruler appointed according to the Shari`ah (Islamic Law) rulings, on account of his Riddah (apostasy).May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
