Swearing to speak the truth and then lying

450

Q 12: a person swore by the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur'an) that he would always tell the truth and never lie even if he made a mistake. One day, however, he made a mistake and when his manager asked him to swear to say the truth, he denied what he did and said otherwise. What is the ruling on what he did?

A: The said person should offer Kaffarah (expiation) for his unfulfilled oath, because he (Part No. 23; Page No. 130) did not do what he had sworn to do. The Kaffarah involves feeding ten Miskins (needy persons); by giving each of them one and half kilograms of wheat, rice, dates, or the like of the staple food, or providing them with clothing, or emancipating a believing slave. If he is unable to do any of these, he must observe Sawm (Fast) for three days to expiate for his broken oath.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
